Impact Story – Edanalis “Nana” Rosario
I joined the Girls Inc. Teen Program in 2013, when I was 13 years old.
The program left a lasting impact on me, focusing not only on personal growth but also on my mental well-being. I loved activities like our mindfulness and mental health sessions and memorable trips to Ironstone Farm, where we found moments of reflection and peace. I remember when I first visited Ironstone Farm. I was scared of the horses, and I didn’t want to get on, but a few days in, I gained confidence to ride, and I was so proud of myself. One of my fondest memories was going to Boston to see Michelle Obama, an inspiring experience for all of us. And, of course, I’ll never forget the Thanksgiving Potlucks we enjoyed with Carol, the staff, and my fellow teens, as well as the fun outings to the Big Apple Circus.
I stayed in the Teen Program until I was 19, and it made such an impact that I chose to stay on as a staff member to help create the same supportive, empowering environment for other girls. I worked here as a Program Specialist, overseeing the youngest girls, ages 5 to 8 for about 3 years.
While I was a staff member, a big focus at Girls Inc. was exposing girls to different careers in STEM to ensure that they knew they belonged in that space, and that they would have mentors and guidance to help them navigate their path. About six months ago, I made the decision to step back from my role to go back to Middlesex Community College – and my experiences here have inspired me to pursue a career in STEM as well. It’s a new chapter, but the values Carol instilled in Girls Inc. — to be strong, smart, and bold — will always be part of my future career, and a part of me.
Just like the other alums before me, I am forever grateful for Carol’s vision and dedication.
